John Denny – VP Marketing

John’s digital experience dates back two decades, to before the web was born.  In 1993, he led the agency team for Prodigy, and helped launch the service’s first web browser .  In 1996– as the AltaVista Search engine first emerged (an era of AltaVista’s history captured in John Batelle’s “The Search”)– John led the team that created the search engine’s first marketing/advertising strategy—and launched AltaVista’s first interactive campaign (one of the earliest display campaigns executed online.). Over his career John spent 11 years in the ad agency business, including stops at three of the top New York Ad Agencies Chiat/Day, Saatchi & Saatchi, and DDB/Needham.  There he led ad strategy for Fortune 500 brands including Sony, Royal Caribbean, CNBC, Staples, and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).  After his agency career, John moved full time to the interactive side to work for one of the first ad network companies— CMGI’s AdSmart (which pioneered behavioral targeting) , then to Winstar Interactive Media as part of a 2 person team leading the site- specific digital rep firm. John joined Advance in 2001 to lead marketing for the local digital unit (now Advance Digital).
